Dennys is a Nike Trainer and member of the Men’s Health Fitness Council.

He will also talk about some of the health challenges he has faced in his life, including surviving cancer--twice! He will share how he has set his mind to handle physical and emotional challenges and some of the people who have helped him along the way.

Melissa Hyatt on Emotional Control
Wednesday Feb 14, 2018
Wednesday Feb 14, 2018
Chief Melissa Hyatt has blended emotional intelligence with a fierce drive to become one of the highest ranking police officers in Baltimore.
Even though she is diminutive in size, she never let that or her gender serve as an excuse for not achieving what she wanted to achieve. She credits valuing empathy and persistence as the reason that she's been able to get to where she is today--the highest ranking female in her agency.
Melissa joined the Baltimore Police Department in 1997. Her previous assignments include Chief of Staff to the Police Commissioner, Chief of Patrol, Area Commander, District Commander of the Central District, Executive Officer of the Southeastern District, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), District Patrol (Northwestern, Southwestern, and Northeastern), and Citywide Operations.
In her current role as Chief of the Special Operations Division, she commands the Tactical Section, the Communications Section, and Headquarters and City Hall Security.
In this conversation we talk about humility, leadership, grit, and what is required of people who serve our communities.
You can follow Melissa on Twitter (@ChiefMHyattBPD) and check out the work she does with the Polar Bear Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics.

Ben Olsen on Being Inclusive
Wednesday Feb 07, 2018
Wednesday Feb 07, 2018
Ben Olsen is the head coach of DC United. I have been fortunate to collaborate with Ben and get to know him as a coach, father, and human. He's an amazing guy. Ben is someone who has tremendous emotional intelligence and knows how to bring people with him on a journey.
Ben had tremendous success as a player. In 1997, he was named the Soccer Player of the Year for the season he had at University of Virginia. He then went on to have success at the pro level where he played with the team he is currently the coach of (DC United). As a player, he was part of two MLS Cup titles, was a two-time All-Star, was the MLS Cup MVP in 1999, and won the Rookie of the Year. He also earned 37 caps with the US men's national team and played in the 2006 world cup.
I have enjoyed getting to know Ben over the years and I know you will enjoy this conversation as well. We get into his upbringing, leadership, humility, culture, and how he used visualization to help him in his career.
Thanks so much to Ben for coming on.

Hakim Warrick on The Vision
Wednesday Jan 31, 2018
Wednesday Jan 31, 2018
Hakim Warrick! If you went to Syracuse, like I did, this interview is going to be a trip down memory lane. If not, Hakim's story is still an incredible one. Hakim helped lead Syracuse University to a national championship, when I happened to be a freshman, and he probably had the most famous block in college basketball history--helping secure the win for his team.
In this conversation, Hakim will share his unexpected journey. He was a "late bloomer" both from a physical and skill stand-point, which impacted his high school experience. When he did develop he ended up at Syracuse University where his expectations quickly went from trying to "make it" at that level to knowing he could make an impact.
Hakim ended up having a very successful 4-year career at Syracuse which led to him being a first-round pick in the NBA. Hakim played 8 years in the league before playing overseas which he is currently doing as a professional.
As you will tell from this conversation, Hakim is a humble guy who has used systems and processes to get to where he is today. He had a vision of playing professionally when he was in 4th grade and was able to follow that vision all the way to the top of his profession.
Thanks to Hakim for coming on the podcast. And thanks to the Syracuse community for listening.
Hakim is not using social media as much these days but you can find him on Twitter and Instagram.

Steve Schlafman on Funding a Legacy
Wednesday Jan 24, 2018
Wednesday Jan 24, 2018
Steve Schlafman is in transition. He worked at a Venture Capital (VC) firm for a number of years and recently decided to break off on his own. Before working as a VC he had jobs at places like Microsoft and The Kraft Group, and those experiences have left an impact on how Steve looks at his career. Steve is certainly passionate about technology, but he will also talk about relationships, habits, and how he is constantly searching for how he can be his best self.
He is mindful. He recently participated in a 10-day intensive meditation retreat, which he talks about in the podcast. He's a deep thinker. He recently did a "think week" where he unplugged from technology to dive into books, videos, and write about a number of topics. He is intentional. He has made shifts in his life when he looked in the mirror and felt like he needed to make a change. He also will talk about some of the challenges in his life including ADHD, anxiety, and he will share what went into his decision to not drink alcohol anymore.
In this episode, we focus on the present--where he is right now, while also getting a sense of how he got to this point.

Candace Parker on Fear and Growth
Wednesday Jan 17, 2018
Wednesday Jan 17, 2018
Candace Parker is one of the best basketball players to ever lace up their sneakers. In high school, Candace won the 2003 and 2004 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Following high school, Candace attended powerhouse University Tennessee where she continued to drastically impact women's basketball as the team won back to back championships her Sophomore and Junior year. She won player of the year honors in college before becoming the first pick of the WNBA draft.
Candace continued her elite performance upon getting to the WNBA. She is a 2X WNBA MVP, is a 4X all-star, and helped lead her team to a WNBA champion in 2016 where she was named the Finals MVP. She has won gold medals and has received a number of other accolades. She has also had a lot of success overseas and currently is playing in China.
Ok. So, while her resume is clearly impressive, what I enjoyed most was learning about how reflective Candace is in regard to her own personal growth. In this conversation, she shares how she studied and observed Kobe Bryant, to learn about his process for greatness. She also discusses how journaling has helped her develop and reach her goals throughout her career. She mentions mentors and people who have also helped nudge her to fulfill her potential and the gratitude she has for those people.
Thanks to Candace for being so generous with her time and being vulnerable enough to share some of her strengths and weaknesses and how she is continuing to grow. If you want to learn more about Candace you can go to her website: http://candaceparker.com/.
Also, Candace mentioned The Pat Summit Foundation which is working to end Alzheimer’s disease.

Elton Brand on Whatever it Takes
Wednesday Jan 03, 2018
Wednesday Jan 03, 2018
Elton Brand had an NBA career that spanned 16 1/2 years. During that time, he was a two-time all-star and one of the top power forwards in the league. He entered the league as the first overall pick in 1999 where he became the co-rookie of the year. Before that, he had an illustrious career at Duke University.
In this conversation, we talk about Elton's mindset growing up and how his Mom helped him become the man he is today. We will also get into the weeds on Elton's best year in the NBA and how his mindset helped him average 24.7 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. Elton was obsessed with trying to be the best player he could be and that season was the tipping point for how he thought about his performance.
Today, Elton serves as the General Manager of the Delaware 87ers and also works with the Philadelphia 76ers front office.
Elton's a warm guy, who makes people feel important when they talk to him. He's thoughtful, humble, and has a great sense of who he is and who he wants to be. His character is what helped him have a long career and has also helped him transition out of playing.
Elton is involved with Team Impact, which was actually co-founded by one of our former guests, Kris Herman.
Lastly, we are excited to launch our partnership with 2Betties. If you love healthy snacks or are looking for a healthy breakfast option, make sure to head over to their site and pick up your "rounds". Don't forget to enter promo code "INTENTIONAL" to get 15% off your first order!

Yael Averbuch on Constant Improvment
Wednesday Nov 29, 2017
Wednesday Nov 29, 2017
I was introduced to Yael by our previous guest, Joanna Lohman. And I am so happy we were able to connect.
Yael is a professional soccer player, about to enter her 10th season as a pro. She's played all around the U.S. and the world and enjoys sharing her journey through the sport as well as encouraging young players to set goals to own their personal development. Yael also played college soccer at University of North Carolina, which is one of the most storied NCAA teams in the country. Yael will talk about her experience at UNC and how it impacted her development as a player.
She recently launched Techne Futbol, a training app to help players sharpen their individual skills.
Yael is a deep thinker who has used hard work to fulfill her potential. Although I don't think she would ever say that she has fulfilled her potential as she is always focused on constant improvement. That mindset has helped her get to where she is today.

Rais Bhuiyan on Working with Enemies
Wednesday Nov 15, 2017
Wednesday Nov 15, 2017
I was introduced to Rais Bhuiyan randomly. As I was leaving a meeting with one of my clients, he introduced me to Rais and I was blown away by his story, as you will be too. Rais has an incredible story to tell. But, what is amazing about Rais is not just what happened to him, but how he used the obstacles and hate he experienced, to create growth opportunities.
A bit more about Rais. He is a Bangladeshi American working as a technology professional in Dallas. He also served in the Bangladesh Air Force, so he is a performer in a number of ways. He left Bangladesh to move to New York City to study computer technology and then found himself in Dallas, Texas where he was employed at a gas station. After the September 11 terror attacks, Mark Anthony Stroman walked up to that gas-station and shot Rais in the face. Incredibly, Rais survived but lost sight in one of his eyes. What happened next is incredible.
Compassion. Empathy. Power. All extremely impactful words. All of those words are part of Rais' story. But, this is also a story about love and how to have an impact on the world. Rais is on a mission. He lives intentionally. He wants to make the world a better place. And he is.
To learn more about Rais you can check him out here:

Chris Nowinski on Making an Impact
Wednesday Nov 01, 2017
Wednesday Nov 01, 2017
Chris Nowinski, Ph.D. is co-founder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation. He is also co-founder of the Boston University CTE Center and the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, a collaboration with Boston University and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, where he currently serves as the outreach, recruitment, education, and public policy leader.
Chris has quite a story to tell. He was an elite athlete in high school, but that certainly was not his only identity. He excelled in the classroom, theater, and also participated in academic competitions.
Excelling in football and school led him to Harvard University where he was an All-Ivy defensive tackle. After college, he tried out and ended up breaking through as a professional wrestler with WWE. It was during his time at the WWE where he experienced a concussion that ended his wrestling career. That concussion sparked his journey into finding out more about concussions and learning everything he could about them.
Chris is interested in psychology, sociology, and neurology, and how all three impact human life. He's a risk taker and purpose-driven person, who believes in hard science and data to make decisions. It’s clear that his curiosity and persistence has helped him change how we view concussions. For that, I know I am grateful for all of the work that he has done and continues to do.
You can read Chris' book Head Games and he's active on social media:
Twitter: @ChrisNowinski1 @ConcussionLF
Facebook: @nowinski.christopher @ConcussionFoundation
Instagram: @christophernowinski @concussionfoundation
You can also check out the work that Chris and his colleagues are doing at the ConcussionFoundation.
Thanks to Chris for coming on the show and hope everyone is now a little bit more informed as a result of this conversation.

Megan Phelps Roper on Finding Empathy
Wednesday Oct 18, 2017
Wednesday Oct 18, 2017
Today's podcast is rich. Rich in nuance, dialogue, and amazing content. I am so excited to share it with you.
Megan Phelps-Roper was raised in the Westboro Baptist Church, the Topeka, Kansas church known internationally for its daily public protests against members of the LGBT community, Jews, the military, and countless others. As a child, teenager and early 20-something, she participated in the picketing almost daily and pioneered the use of social media in the church. Dialogue with "enemies" online proved instrumental in her de-radicalization, and she left the church and her entire way of life in November 2012. Since then she has become an advocate for people and ideas she was taught to despise -- especially the value of empathy in dialogue with people across ideological lines.
In this conversation, we go deep into her story and the challenging decision to leave her family and the church. We also talk about the power of empathy, social media, and how we can get people to change how they see the world. Megan also shares how she set her mind when she was protesting and how she sets her mind today, as she travels the country speaking about her experience.
Megan's a deep thinker. She is extremely well read. She's caring. And most importantly, she's a lifelong learner. I hope you can deeply listen to her message, and understand where she is coming from, and what she is going toward.
Megan has an incredible Ted Talk that has over 4 million views. She has a forthcoming memoir and movie that is currently titled, This Above All.
She is extremely active on social media.....

Podcast Update: Intentional Change
Wednesday Sep 20, 2017
Wednesday Sep 20, 2017
Hi Everyone,
This episode is a little different. It’s shorter and it’s just with Brian. The purpose is to give a “State of the Union” in order to update you on the podcast. The first update is that we are changing the name of the podcast to "Intentional Performers with Brian Levenson". We have discussed this for some time now and think it's time to make an intentional shift. We are really excited about the change and think it will serve you, the listener.
We also are going to consciously sift each episode for great gems from guests where they share an intentional act that they did in their journey to help them get where they are today. The hope is that you can learn from these intentional performers and think about how you are, and how you can be, intentional with not just your performance, but your life.
You will notice a lot of changes coming to the podcast. We have gotten terrific feedback from you and we want to make the show as helpful as possible. I also recently hired a producer (Michael Yoder with Truth Work Media), who is helping me design and develop the best podcast possible.
I am truly grateful for all of you who are listening! It truly means a ton to me. As we continue to make the podcast as professional as possible, we need your help as well. If you could share episodes on social media and write us a review on itunes, it really helps us grow our community. Anything you can do is greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all of the guests who have come on the show and thanks to all of you for listening!
Look forward to hearing from you all as we continue to be intentional with the show!
Talk soon,
Brian Levenson
